Kris Olson is an iGaming journalist and casino reviewer based in Ottawa. He holds a Bachelor of Science Journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, graduating in 2013.

Before joining CasinoRIX in 2022, he spent several years as a freelance writer for iGaming affiliate projects, covering casino and sportsbook reviews across multiple markets. That work gave him a close look at how inconsistently operators were being evaluated, and how rarely reviews reflected what players actually encountered after signing up. It also brought him face to face with a more structural problem: licensing records were rarely checked, ownership chains were left unexamined, and compliance histories went unmentioned. For players, that missing information is the difference between choosing a safe platform and a risky one. His journalism background made that impossible to ignore. He moved into deeper investigative review work to do it properly.

At CasinoRIX, Kris has reviewed casino platforms across multiple international markets. He starts by confirming the platform is legally operating and holds a current licence, then checks SSL encryption, company ownership, software partnerships, payment providers, and any previous compliance issues. When the records don’t hold up, the platform doesn’t get a recommendation. It gets documented.

He has completed GamCare Online Training for safer gambling practices, Google News Initiative Training, and the Reuters Institute’s Digital Journalism course. He also holds certifications in online casino compliance and regulatory frameworks from Coursera, and has completed iGaming-specific courses in Anti-Money Laundering and responsible gambling practices through Udemy.

For Kris, publishing a review means standing behind every claim in it. Operator statements get checked against what testing actually shows before anything goes live.

Outside work, Kris photographs wildlife along the Ottawa River, focusing mainly on migratory birds and wetland habitats.
